Parallel Grievance

Created almost 7 years ago
Parallel Grievance is a reaction to the lack of empathy shown towards the family of a perpetrator during a trial. I aim to demonstrate that these families grieve similarly to the family of the victim. Although the life of a victim is taken away from their family, the life of the perpetrator is essentially taken away from their family as well. In this piece I organized a grid-like construction of slow motion videos of families from both sides of a case, grieving in court. These videos were scrambled to emphasize the point that the viewer cannot distinguish visually between these grieving families. The slowing down of the videos aids the viewer in analyzing the families’ emotions to demonstrate how these crimes affect them.
