Tortured by hashtags? Addicted to likes? Bloated on the excesses of consumer culture? Then perhaps you’ll see yourself reflected in SPECULUM. This digital artwork is a mirror of contemporary existence, a Garden of Earthly Delights for the information age created by SMACK, the artistic trio made up of Ton Meijdam, Thom Snels and Béla Zsigmond. A digital triptych, SPECULUM comprises three panels: Eden, Paradise and Hell. The central panel, Paradise, was commissioned and exhibited by the Stedelijk Museum Breda (formerly the Museum of the Image / MOTI) in 2016 as part of the Hieronymus Bosch 500-year anniversary. A huge success, both at the museum show and online, Paradise attracted the attention of Colección SOLO, a private collection of contemporary art based in Madrid, which acquired the work and commissioned SMACK to create the side panels, Eden and Hell. Like Hieronymus Bosch in his day, SMACK call out the risks of everyday temptations. From the pastel-coloured calm of Eden to the gory torture rooms of an animated Hell, this is a universe populated by recognisably freakish beings. A garden of digital delirium.
