white concentric circles expand outward from a central point, their edges subtly warped by a process known as Perlin noise, before collapsing gently upon themselves. this artwork was inspired by Kjetil Golid, whose piece (https://www.instagram.com/p/BVprv6xhbbF) captured my imagination. there's something very tactile, very sensuous about the piece that drew me in. I was curious to see if I could reproduce it myself and expand upon the idea. where his interpretation already felt like a living system -- going about its business with its own characteristics and mannerisms -- I hoped my interpretation might feel like the cyclical birth, life, and death of an abstract organism. I am always satisfied when my work resembles nature, and I feel this piece evokes the growth of tree-rings, ocean waves, or a fingerprint, even. it's calming and familiar despite its mechanical origins, interpretable despite its precise computation. this piece is what I consider to be my first "code sketch", and for that reason I hold it close to my heart. it was my first foray into exploring visual, mathematical, and algorithmic qualities in a disciplined way -- in a way that is habitual and core to my everyday life. this approach is an essential part of my art practice now, and any discoveries I make inevitably weave themselves into any other projects I'm working on.
